A Plumhill Capital Group guide from Hendersonville, North Carolina to the state plumbing and HVAC contractor licenses, based on the State Board's applicant information, renewal page and contractor license definitions read on October 24, 2026. Licensing questions belong with the Board.

NC HVAC License Lookup: How a Lender Confirms a Contractor License

The Board's public license search lets anyone look up a plumbing, heating, fuel piping or fire sprinkler licensee. The renewal page adds that a license can be checked for its current expiration date by entering the license number, and that a "License Not Found" message means the license has not been renewed for the current year or may not be valid for another reason.

A lender or funding partner reviewing a contractor's request can run the same search. Expect to be asked for the license number, the license classes held, the qualifier's name, and that the name on the license matches the business or its owner.

Keep a copy of the current license certificate in the same folder as the business's tax returns and bank statements; it is one of the first papers a partner asks a trade contractor for.

The Board's website lists its Raleigh office and phone, (919) 875-3612.

NC HVAC License Requirements Before Taking on Commercial Work

The Board's applicant information page says that to sit for the plumbing or heating contractor examinations, an applicant must have two years (4,000 hours) of on-site, full-time experience in installing, maintaining, servicing or repairing systems in the category sought, and that up to half of that experience may be academic or technical training directly related to the field.

The page also says there is no license reciprocity with other states, that North Carolina has a technical examination waiver agreement with South Carolina for plumbing and HVAC contractors (the North Carolina business law exam is still required), and that the Neighbor State License Recognition Act may allow equivalent licensure for North Carolina residents licensed in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia or West Virginia.

On timing, the page says application processing was averaging six weeks, that the exam must be taken no later than 90 days after notification, and that passing applicants submit a license activation form and fee no more than 45 days after passing or must retest.

For funding, the practical point is timing: a shop that plans commercial work under a license it does not yet hold should build the Board's processing time into its plan before financing equipment for that work.

NC Plumbing License Requirements and the Funding Questions They Raise

The Board's contractor license definitions list two plumbing contractor classes. P-I (Plumbing Class I) covers potable water and drain, waste and vent piping in any building, residential, commercial or industrial. P-II (Plumbing Class II) covers the same systems in single-family detached dwellings only. Narrower licenses cover restricted exterior plumbing (RLP) and water heater replacement in single-family homes (LWH).

The class shapes the funding question. A P-II shop that wants to bid commercial work needs the P-I first, so a partner financing a larger van or more crew for commercial jobs may ask how the license will be in place.

A buyout raises a similar question. If the departing owner is the licensed qualifier, the business needs another qualifier, and a partner may treat that as a condition of the loan.

HVAC and plumbing business loans covers vans, tools and buyouts.

The renewal page also says licenses that lapsed several years back cannot simply be renewed; the licensee must pass the exams again. A shop buying out a long-retired partner should check the license status before the price is set, since an inactive qualifier adds nothing to the business being bought.

NC HVAC License Types and the Jobs Each One Covers

The same contractor license definitions divide heating and air conditioning into three groups:

  • Heating Group 1: H1-I covers wet, water-based comfort heating systems in any building; H1-II covers them in single-family detached dwellings only.
  • Heating Group 2: H2 covers forced-air heating and cooling systems with cooling capacity over fifteen tons in any building.
  • Heating Group 3: H3-I covers forced-air systems of fifteen tons or less in any building; H3-II covers them in single-family detached dwellings only.
  • Fuel piping (FP) covers fuel gas piping from an approved source to equipment inside the premises.

Limited electrical work incident to plumbing and HVAC work falls under an SP-PH license issued by a separate board, the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors.

Licenses are renewed each year: the renewal page quotes General Statutes 87-22, that licenses expire on the last day of December each year, adds that there is no grace period after expiration, and quotes a $25 increase when renewal is not completed during January.

Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors had 71 employer establishments in Henderson County, NC in 2023 (CBP). County figures are on the Hendersonville, NC page, and funding types on the funding options page.
